L’open source non è ancora maturo sul fronte applicativo aziendale da poter competere con SAP. L’open source d’altro canto funziona benissimo (meglio dei software proprietari) in altri contesti un po più leggeri dal punto di vista applicativo. Già nel CRM oppure nell’office automation le soluzioni open sono molto competitive e appetibili (per funzionalità e low cost) alla piccole imprese. La crisi spingerà sicuramente le imprese (anche quelle più in salute) ad ingegnarsi per ridurre i budget e quindi a cercare delle alternative. Beh, permettetemi di dire anche la mia, visto che sono uno dei due ricercatori che ha seguito la ricerca.
Dai commenti che sono già usciti qui, come da quelli a volte un po’ strampalati che sono stati postati su Punto Informatico o altrove sul web, credo che emerga fortemente - ancora una volta - il fatto che l’Open Source è un fenomeno molto complesso.
Una delle cose che emerge chiaramente dalla ricerca è che è finita la “fase ideologica”, come diceva Stefano. Questo anche e soprattutto nel senso che si è finalmente smesso di chiedersi se l’Open Source “funzioni in sé” e si è passati a ragionare su qualcosa di molto più interessante, cioè dove funzioni, in che contesti, quali soluzioni funzionino e come lavorino le imprese che stanno facendo funzionare tutto ciò. Se di commenti “sballati” (non qui per fortuna) se ne leggono ancora parecchi, è perché qualcuno non vuole uscire da queste logiche manichee: da una parte l’Open Source “morale” vs. il closed source “immorale”, dall’altra l’Open Source funziona vs. “è un disastro” oppure l’Open Source “permette di fare business” vs. “fa solo fare la fame a chi lo offre”.
Bene, noi abbiamo tentato di uscire da queste logiche esclusive e di “tirare fuori” dei numeri concreti, per quanto parziali. Parziali anche in virtù della complessità che è insita nel fenomeno stesso. Credo anche che, tuttavia, questo rendersi conto di aver colto solo la “punta dell’iceberg” sia una consapevolezza che ci sprona davvero ad ampliare in futuro la ricerca, a capire di più e non certo a considerare la battaglia come inaffrontabile, il fenomeno come “non descrivibile”. Mi rendo conto che – e la cosa si acuisce quando si cerca di fare confronti fra i costi, il TCO, l’affidabilità… - sembra a volte che ci sia un “principio di indeterminazione” che colpisce certe analisi. Come se qualsiasi ricerca sull’Open Source rischiasse, per il solo fatto di parlarne, di modificare e manipolare la realtà che si va a descrivere. Noi abbiamo cercato di uscire anche da questa impasse.
Queste dinamiche, che ho tratteggiato molto molto velocemente, danno credo anche una giustificazione del fatto che l’Open Source sia sparito dai titoli dei giornali. Ovvero, da una parte non è più una sorpresa il fatto che esista e funzioni (dato che mi tocca ugualmente da vicino, posso dire di aver visto lo stesso calo di attenzione nei confronti del “mancato fallimento” della sfida di Wikipedia). Dall’altra parte credo che la complessità delle dinamiche che l’Open Source innesca - per la sua stessa natura - lo renda un argomento che non si può dipingere a tinte forti o uniformi, ma che richiede la pazienza di descriverne i mezzitoni ed i chiaroscuri. Anche per questo credo che i media, oggi, se ne interessino di meno mentre, viceversa, mi pare che per la ricerca divenga un argomento ancora più stimolante.
Mi sto dilungando, ma vi voglio lasciare con un aneddoto. Giusto stamattina incontro in treno una persona che ho intravisto più volte, un amico di un amico, con cui ho in passato scambiato solo pochissime parole. So però che lavora come analista e programmatore. Stamattina invece entriamo nel discorso e… cosa vedo? Ha in mano una guida su Ubuntu Linux! Mi racconta che l’impresa per cui lavora sviluppa praticamente solo soluzioni ad hoc, ma che sempre più si stanno avvicinando all’Open Source, soprattutto per la spinta e le competenze di chi vi lavora. Il libro gli serve perché, tra impiegati, stanno organizzando dei corsi di auto-formazione sull’Open Source, Linux, OpenLDAP…

Vorrei aggiungere qualche altro elemento alla discussione. Come ha spiegato Stefano nel suo post, l’Open Source è ormai entrato in una fase di maturità. Il periodo che potremmo definire “eroico” è stato superato: oggi come oggi il quesito sull’efficacia del modello Open Source nel mercato business penso di possa archiviare.
L’Open Source nelle aziende è presente, funziona ed è ormai una realtà consolidata. Punto.
Lo stesso Stallman, guru della comunità del Free Software, all’interno del lungo dibattito nato dalla rivisitazione della terza versione della licenza GPL, ha sottolineato come i tempi siano cambiati rispetto agli esordi del 1985. I tempi cambiano, il mercato cambia, ed anche l’approccio degli operatori su questo tema cambia.
La realtà che emerge dalla ricerca, ma che riscontro anch’io quotidianamente, è quella di un uso inconsapevole e diffuso di numerosi software Open Source: nel corso delle interviste di approfondimento fatte sul campione di aziende oggetto della ricerca, ci siano resi conto un po’ alla volta che molto spesso l’utilizzo di applicativi Open, seppur presente, non veniva menzionato anche se inglobato in modo determinante all’interno delle soluzioni e dei pacchetti offerti dall’azienda.
Personalmente, a pelle, mi pare di poter dire che anche tra gli utenti comuni l’Open Source sia ormai una realtà consolidata: progetti di grande successo come Firefox, piuttosto che OpenOffice.org (ricordiamo che solo in Italia è stato scaricato più di 5 milioni di volte) così come alcune distribuzioni Linux (vedi il successo planetario di Ubuntu), sono oggi utilizzo da un percentuale sempre più ampi di utenti “non esperti”.
Il mondo accademico (ahimè quasi sempre in ritardo rispetto il mondo reale), ha per il momento trascurato l’analisi di questo settore: la maggior parte delle letteratura sull’argomento si è concentrata sugli incentivi legati allo sviluppo di software all’interno delle comunità, piuttosto che sull’utilizzo l’adozione di questo software all’interno delle comunità.
La rilevanza economica di questo mondo, difficile da stimare e verificare con dati empirici, non è stata ancora affrontata in modo sistematico. Basti pensare che solo dal 2007 un istituto statistico importante come l’ISTAT ha iniziato a considerare l’adozione di sistemi operativi liberi all’interno delle aziende come una voce a sé stante.

Volevo aggiungere qualche considerazione circa la “maturità” del mercato open source, partendo dall’offerta per poi allargare il discorso alla domanda.
La specializzazione a cui possono giungere, e spesso giungono le micro-imprese che lavorano con l’open, è un valore in potenza. Il punto è che la domanda di questi servizi non può essere efficacemente attivata dal “basso”. D’altro canto solution providers e system integrator di medie-grandi dimensioni aspettano ad organizzare un offering open source strutturato, che includa tra le altre cose una rete di partners in grado di supportare efficacemente prodotti della lunga coda dell’open source.
D’altra parte è necessario che la stessa domanda, che non di rado si auto-organizza con risorse proprie, inizi a valutare modalità di acquisizione di soluzioni open basate sulla coopetition.

trovo abbastanza paradossale che le piccole imprese dell’open source non siano state in grado di replicare quei meccanismi di coordinamento che hanno fatto la forza delle piccole imprese dei nostri distretti.
le pmi del nostro tradizionalissimo made in italy hanno “fatto rete” facendo leva sulla prossimità culturale e sulla condivisione del quotidiano. ripartirei da qui. perché non provare a costruire insieme un vissuto sociale condiviso? parlo di organizzare incontri, feste, momenti di condivisione.
non è detto che sia un successo scontato, ma vista l’affluenza dell’evento di qualche giorno fa direi che il potenziale per una comunità fisica - oltre che online - c’è. magari è così l’open source potrà funzionare nel nostro paese.
Premesso che il mio punto di vista è “biased by definition”, penso che esistano alcune spiegazioni per questo fenomeno.
La prima, e forse più importante, è che non si tratta di “distretti”, ma di realtà che al contrario lavorano sulle stesse tecnologie. La scarsa propensione a chiamare un’altra azienda - appena il 30% vi ricorre stabilmente, stando alla ricerca - probabilmente non è dovuta solo alla consuetudine (scarico_dunque_sono,provo_quindi_faccio), ma è probabilmente figlia di una relativa “speciazione tecnologica”, non favorita dalla attuale immaturità del mercato (mi riferisco qui all’atteggiamento attendista dei fornitori di medie-grandi dimensioni, come alla domanda ancora incerta che non riuscendo ad indurre un offering più maturo finisce peraltro per auto-soddisfarsi, con un livello di efficienza che andrebbe monitorato attraverso puntuali politiche di governance).
La seconda considerazione, condivisa peraltro con altri, è che organizzazioni “flessibili” possono essere senzaltro utili per obiettivi tattici, ma per obiettivi di più ampio respiro servono strutture dedicate e ben finalizzate.
Rimane che il ruolo della domanda, e soprattutto di quella pubblica che può porsi obiettivi di sistema, è fondamentale.

parto dal tuo secondo punto e convegno. in verità, anche nei nostri distretti il ruolo delle imprese leader ha un peso crescente a scapito di forme di governo “flessibili”. le reti sono sempre meno informali e sempre più centrate su soggetti leader che si fanno carico di organizzarle in forma consapevole.
i problemi allora diventano due: il primo come favorire nuove logiche di divisione del lavoro (per favorire vere logiche di specializzazione), il secondo come far emergere soggetti leader in un mondo restio a forme di governo di tipo top down.
completo la mia proposta di prima: e se oltre a mettere in piedi eventi e grandi festival dell’open organizzassimo qualche riunione con qualche venture capital? magari qualche leader dell’open source si fa avanti.

Hai ragione Stefano, sono anche io convinto che l’assenza di un ‘catalizzatore’ sia un fattore critico, del resto testimoniato dall’osservatorio europeo delle PMI. Questo soggetto terzo potrebbe essere un’azienda più grande (discorso della specializzazione), come un altro soggetto abilitante. In questo senso gli incubatori di imprese, i parchi scientifici o altre strutture operanti sul territorio potrebbero essere una risposta al problema.
Circa la tua proposta mi interessa approfondire, anche perché mi capita che VC o aziende open al secondo o terzo round cerchino soggetti su cui investire. Parliamone.
