sono anch’io del partito della meritocrazia. ho vissuto negli stati uniti e ho beneficiato delle opportunità di quel paese. in francia ho frequentato una di quelle grandi scuole che abravanel cita come esempio. so che il nostro paese deve disperatamente diventare più meritocratico.
il problema è un altro: vogliamo davvero aumentare la meritocrazia dentro al nostro sistema paese? se questo è l’obiettivo, misurare il nostro stato di salute calcolando la distanza che ci separa dal modello delle ivy league può solo generare frustrazioni.

Per me una società basata sulla meritocrazia deve passare necessariamente per una scuola (e più in generale un sistema di formazione)che sappia valorizzare i talenti.
In questo senso non mi vergogno a dire che dovremmo prendere a modello il sistema americano. Da quello che vedo (da qui) gli studenti americani sono abituati alle “competition”; dalla scuola all’università si fanno contest su qualsiasi cosa: la conoscenza della cultura classica, lo sviluppo di nuove idee imprenditoriali, la presentazione di casi di studio… per non parlare delle attività sportive.
In questi casi la persona (ma più spesso il gruppo) che vince riceve, oltre ad un buon voto un riconoscimento pubblico e un maggiore appagamento personale. Inoltre tutti hanno la possibilità di assistere e valutare la performance degli studenti, in modo tale che sia condivisa la sensazione che chi vince sia veramente il migliore.
Non come qui da noi, dove il sistema d’istruzione premia a volte i più diligenti, ma quasi mai i più brillanti.
Oggettivamente, è scontato che il sistema Italia non è meritocratico - forse non lo è mai stato, se guardiamo anche alla nostra storia. Siamo il paese dei campanili e del particulare, del signorotto di provincia e dei presidenti di qualsiasi cosa: tutti vogliono comandare, nel loro piccolo, e sistemare gli amici. Micro e macro (penso alla mafia) strutture di potere che dialogano con le istituzioni, a tutti i i livelli. Dalla religione alla politica, e non è qualunquismo.
Ma continuare a raccontarcelo non aggiunge tasselli utili alla risoluzione del problema. E’ la solita storia: puoi essere in gamba (nel lavoro come all’università), ma spesso è più importante chi conosci piuttosto che chi sei e cosa sai fare; e molte persone che “conoscono e si conoscono” fanno da tappo a talenti validi, in tutti i campi.
Per quanto difficile sia, la scommessa diventa riuscire a farcela in QUESTO sistema, perchè sognare condizioni che non ci sono porta solo alla frustrazione. Poi possiamo raccontarcela di quanto bello SAREBBE - ma intanto non è - e perdiamo di vista la realtà.
